“I had a teacher notice I missed class, and ask ‘Is everything ok?’” “I wasn’t getting an attitude or a feeling of welcome.” “I couldn’t buy the textbooks and ended up having to drop the class.” These quotes are just a few examples of what students are saying about their college experiences. Listening deeply to students’ voices can better equip colleges to proactively respond to their learners’ needs. In this presentation from the 2017 Strengthening Student Success conference, the RP Group will share what we have learned from conducting focus groups with student populations identified as disproportionately impacted at several colleges across the state. Participants will then engage with and outline specific steps that can be taken to learn more about students’ experiences on their own campuses.
