Student UX (User Experience): A Network for Success

“User experience (UX) focuses on having a deep understanding of users, what they need, what they value, their abilities, and also their limitations. It also takes into account the business goals and objectives of the group managing the project. UX best practices promote improving the quality of the user’s interaction with and perceptions of your product and any related services.”

As learning modalities evolve to include experiential, informal, interdisciplinary, and social learning, so are college campuses changing to accommodate these modes, with hybrid, multi-use, flexible, and myriad other environments that accommodate when, where, and how students learn. Within this context of change is a strong focus on student success. Now widely defined in holistic terms that mesh wellness, inclusivity, and social connection with more traditional measures of academic accomplishment, such as grades and earning potential, student success is changing how we approach integrated campus planning and design. So how do we gauge success?

One tactic that is being used to gauge success is to measure student engagement, or “user experience,” via direct feedback sources, like surveys. The idea is that when students feel engaged in meaningful academic experiences—made possible by the right mix of conditions such as safety, comfort, inspiration, challenge, curiosity, social connection, to name a few—data and ideas get transferred into real knowledge. In response to this user-focused ethos, colleges and universities are homing in on the first year experience, first generation students, personalized learning, and the imperative of social communities on campuses.

What this looks and feels like varies, as the “student success network” is manifested in informal, grassroots efforts as well as institution-wide initiatives—layered ecosystems that often parallel the places in which campuses reside. So, we ask: Is your campus student-ready?

Join us in conversation at UCLA, in the center of an incredibly diverse region where worlds sometimes collide and often thrive, putting the conversation around student success in sharp relief. Campus and community game changers, including students, will share ways to innovate and overcome barriers to student success by prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellness.

Join your peers at UCLA!
